Uganda Coffee Development Authority holds a National Cup Tasters Championship to select the professional coffee cupper who demonstrates speed, skill, and accuracy in distinguishing the taste differences in specialty coffees. This year the 6th National Cup Tasters Championship was held at Protea Hotel, Kampala on February 8 and 9.
Coffee has many distinct taste characteristics and in this competition the objective is for the cupper to identify them. Three cups are placed in a triangle. Two of the cups are identical coffees and the third cup is a different coffee. The cupper is tasked to identify the odd cup in the triangle as quickly as possible using smell, taste, attention and experience. A total of 8 sets of triangles are placed in each round.
There were three rounds in this competition - knock-offs/preliminaries round, semi-finals and finals. Twenty six competitors participated in the preliminaries round held at UCDA’s Lugogo Laboratory from 5th to 6th February 2018. The eight competitors who identified the highest number of correct cups in the least time qualified for the semi-finals round which took place simultaneously with the 11th National Barista Championship at Protea Hotel Kampala on 8th February 2018.
One of Uganda Coffee Development Authority’s specific objectives is to promote domestic coffee consumption through trainings, coffee exhibitions, essay and quiz competitions and barista and cup taster’s championships.
