On 9 February 2018, one week to Africa Barista Challenge at the 16th African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition Simon Eidodo was tussling it out with 14 other baristas for the Uganda National Barista Champion title. Before he was announced as the champion Simon exuded calm and confidence. It was almost as if he knew he had bagged the title. The cheers that erupted in the Protea hall where the announcement was made were proof that Simon was a crowd favourite. Fifteen semifinalists competed in the Uganda National Barista Championship to make the best espressos, cappuccinos and signature drinks before a team of 7 judges – 4 sensory judges, 4 technical judges and 1 head judge in front of a crowd of students, baristas, UCDA staff and other coffee lovers.
The winner of the UNBC represents Uganda at the African Barista Challenge annually. This year's winner was Simon Eidodo who has been a barista for over 10 years. He competed with three other baristas from Kenya, South Africa and Burundi and was crowned the 1st runner up. Simon will go on to represent Uganda at the World Barista Championship in Amsterdam from 21-23 June.
The World Barista Championship (WBC) is the preeminent international coffee competition produced annually by World Coffee Events (WCE). The competition, like the UNBC and the ABC, focuses on promoting excellence in coffee and advancing the barista profession. It also and engages a worldwide audience with an annual championship event that serves as the culmination of local and regional events around the globe.
Every year, more than 50 champion competitors each prepare 4 espressos, 4 milk drinks, and 4 original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance set to music.
We wish Simon all the best as he prepares to represent his country.
